Description

James Monroe, a Founding Father of the U.S., fought and was wounded during the Revolutionary War.  He studied law under Thomas Jefferson and was elected to the Senate of the first U.S. Congress.  He served as Secretary of War and Secretary of State under James Madison.  He was governor of Virginia and as a diplomat helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase.  As president, James Monroe bought Florida from Spain, and oversaw the ratification of treaties that extended the U.S. border along the 42nd   Parallel to the Pacific Ocean.  He supported colonies for free African Americans in what would become Liberia.  In 1823, he announced U.S. opposition to European intervention in independent countries in the Americas with the Monroe Doctrine.

The secretary of state was created as part of the president’s cabinet beginning with the administration of George Washington.  Washington created four cabinet positions to provide him with a source of key advisers, in the form of the attorney general, secretary of the treasury, secretary of state, and secretary of war.  Current presidential cabinets are made up of sixteen officers.  Members are chosen by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.  The secretary of state is regarded as the most senior position in the Cabinet and is fourth in the line of succession to the president.

This James Monroe history mug is part of our Secretary of State series which includes the many unique individuals who served as U.S. Secretary of State.
