Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, governor of Virginia, and part of the Continental Congress during the Revolution.  He was the first U.S. minister to France, and served as secretary of state under George Washington.  As president, in 1803,  he oversaw the purchase of the Louisiana Territory and sent Lewis and Clark to explore the new west.  In 1807, he signed a law banning the importation of slaves.  Jefferson, who spoke five languages, was a leader in the Enlightenment.  He was an inventor, who had a deep interest in architecture, science, religion, and philosophy.  He founded the University of Virginia.  He expressed opposition to slavery but owned hundreds and only freed a few.
