U.S. President James Madison is hailed as the “Father of the Constitution.”  As a leader in the House, he drafted the Constitution and the first ten amendments (known as the Bill of Rights).  Madison and Jefferson organized the Democratic-Republican Party.  As Jefferson’s secretary of state, he supervised the Louisiana Purchase.  During his presidency, he led the country into the War of 1812 with Britain.  Like many Virginia statesmen, he owned a tobacco plantation and was a slaveholder.  Because the number of seats in the U.S. Congress depended on population, and in order to have greater representation, Madison supported the Three-fifths Compromise, which counted one slave as three-fifths of a person.
