Description
Born a slave, Andre Cailloux petitioned for manumission in 1846. In 1862 Cailloux joined the First Louisiana Native Guard and was made captain of Company E. His company was ordered to make a suicidal assault at Port Hudson. Despite heavy losses, Cailloux inspired his men on the assault during which his arm was blown off by cannon fire. Even after losing his arm, he continued to lead the charge until he was killed by an artillery shell. His heroism became the stuff of legend and inspired many African Americans to enlist.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
