In 1831 Charles Darwin embarked on a five- year survey voyage around the world on the HMS Beagle. His study of a variety of specimens, including those from the Galápagos Islands, led him to formulate his theory of the branching pattern of evolution. Charles Darwin called this process natural selection which he said had a similar effect to artificial selection used in selective breeding. Darwin published his theory in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.
Natural Selection is the process in which plants and animals that effectively changed and progressed to meet the shifting requirements of their natural habitat flourished, while those that failed to evolve and reproduce perished.
This Charles Darwin History Mug is part of our Science & Inventors series which includes many unique individuals who shaped our world through their actions.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
