Dennis Hart Mahan graduated first in his class from West Point in 1824. He went to Europe to learn advanced engineering techniques and upon his return took the position as chair of the Engineering Department at West Point. Dennis Mahan was responsible for getting the best-known civil engineering practices into the U.S. military. His books on the subject were extremely influential, especially those on field and fixed fortifications. His lectures on entrenchment and fortifications were learned by West Point cadets who later served in both the Union and Confederate armies. In 1871 the board at West Point suggested that Mahan be forced to retire, which resulted in his committing suicide by leaping into the paddlewheel of a steamboat on the Hudson River.

The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
