Description

Edmund Rice graduated from Norwich University and rose to the rank of brigadier general.  He served in the Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War.  During the Civil War, he saw action in more than a dozen battles including, Ball’s Bluff, Fair Oaks, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, where he was wounded and later received the Medal of Honor for conspicuous bravery while repelling Pickett’s Charge.  He was wounded again at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, where he was captured, but he escaped while being transported on a freight train.  After the war, he received patents on four inventions that improved military implements.  In 1877 he served as military envoy to Russia and England.

This Edmund Rice mug is part of our Civil War Series and our Medal of Honor series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
