Description

Ethan Allen was a founding father of the state of Vermont.  Born on the Connecticut frontier, his conflicts with the puritanical church and desire for advancement led him to land speculation in the New Hampshire Grants.  A series of legal challenges by New York for the land led to the formation of the Green Mountain Boys.  Allen, as leader, drove many New York settlers out of those lands  When the Revolution began, Allen helped capture Fort Ticonderoga and in 1775 led an attack on Montreal that failed.  He was captured and held prisoner for three years.  By the time Allen was released, the Grants citizens declared their independence as the Vermont Republic.  Allen was a farmer, author and land speculator.  His book Reason foreshadowed the Transcendentalism movement.

This Ethan Allen History Mug is part of our Vermont series which includes many unique individuals who played an important part in molding Vermont’s history.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
