Description

George Crook was a brigade commander at Antietam serving in the IX Corps under Ambrose Burnside.  Crook was ordered to take his men across a bridge over Antietam Creek, later known as Burnside᾽s Bridge.  Crook᾽s brigade made the first of three attempts to take the bridge.  However, 500 Confederate soldiers from Georgia, who had good field position, held off nearly 14,000 Union troops for several hours.  The delay in taking the bridge allowed time for A.P. Hill᾽s Confederate division to arrive from Harpers Ferry, which turned the tide of the battle.  After the Civil War, Crook fought in the Indian Wars against the Sioux, Snake, Paiute, and Apache.  He was nicknamed Nantan Lupan by the Apache, which means “Gray Wolf.”

This George Crook mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
