Description

George Dewey was born in Montpelier, Vermont. At age 15 he attended Norwich Military School, and entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1854.  Dewey served in the U.S. Navy from 1858-1917.  When the Civil War began, Dewey was an executive lieutenant assigned to Admiral Farragut’s fleet where he took part in the capture of New Orleans.  At the Battle of Port Hudson he experienced the fiercest fighting of his career aboard the ship Mississippi, which was wrecked by Confederate fire.  After the Civil War he served in various capacities, from the European theater to Asia.  It was in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War where he became a national hero.  In 1903 he was made Admiral of the Navy the only person in US history to achieve that rank.

This George Dewey mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
