George Brinton McClellan won early battles in West Virginia and was quickly appointed commander of units that formed the Army of the Potomac. He was instrumental in training and organizing forces after the Union defeat at Bull Run and was adored by his soldiers. George McClellan suffered from the mistaken belief that the Confederate Army always outnumbered him. This, in turn, led to his reluctance to engage them in battle. At Antietam, he learned from Lee᾽s ‟lost order” that he was not facing concentrated forces of the Confederate Army, as it was divided. McClellan was slow to take action, which allowed Lee to bring his army together. The Battle of Antietam was fought to a draw and Lee retreated. McClellan was slow to pursue and Lee escaped back into Virginia.

The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
