Description

Gouverneur Kemble Warren was a career officer, serving as both topographical engineer and combat commander.  He served in major campaigns including Battle of Big Bethel, Siege of Yorktown, Seven Days Battles, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.  He is best known for his defense of Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg.  He recognized the importance of the undefended position and directed Colonel Strong Vincent’s brigade to occupy it minutes before it was attacked by Confederates.  Warren suffered a wound to the neck defending the position.  The loss of Little Round Top could have led to a Union defeat in the Battle of Gettysburg.

This Gouverneur Warren mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
