Ira Allen and his brother Ethan were instrumental in establishing the state of Vermont. In 1771, Ira traveled into the wilderness area of what is now Burlington as a surveyor for the Onion River Land Company. This was a company formed by the Allen brothers to purchase lands under the New Hampshire Land Grants. Ira was a leading figure in the declaration of Vermont as a republic in 1777 and was a member of the Vermont Legislature from 1776 to 1777. At the same time, Ethan was held as a prisoner by the British. Ira contributed his land for the establishment of the University of Vermont in 1780. He traveled to France in 1795, seeking help to seize Canada and create an independent republic called United Columbia. Captured at sea by the British, he was held in jail for eight years.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
