Description

“Fighting Joe Hooker” was a career officer who saw action in the Seminole and Mexican-American Wars.  In the Civil War at Antietam, his corps launched the first assault of the battle against Stonewall Jackson᾽s Corps, where they fought to a standstill.  Joseph Hooker was shot in the foot and left the field of battle.  Three months later, at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Hooker openly criticized the command of Burnside for the deadly frontal attacks up Marye᾽s Heights.  In 1863 Burnside was relieved of command and Hooker became commander of the Army of the Potomac.  After being badly defeated at Chancellorsville Hooker was relieved of that command, but regained his reputation with a major victory at Lookout Mountain.

This Joseph Hooker mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
