Jubal Early was a lawyer who during the Civil War served under Stonewall Jackson and later under Robert E. Lee. Lee called Early the “Bad Old Man” because of his short temper. He commanded forces at first and second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and campaigns in the Shenandoah Valley. After the war he fled to Mexico, then Cuba and finally Canada, where he wrote A Memoir of the Last Year of the War for Independence, in the Confederate States of America, which was published in 1867. He was pardoned by Andrew Johnson and returned to Virginia to practice law. Early promoted the Lost Cause Movement and criticized the actions of Longstreet at Gettysburg.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
