Description

Hugh Judson Kilpatrick graduated from West Point in 1861.  He was made captain of the 5th New York Infantry.  He has the distinction of being the first U.S. Army officer to be wounded during the Battle of Big Bethel.  Judson had the reputation as being fearless but reckless with the lives of his men.  The nickname given to this command was “Kill-Cavalry.”  He was charged with corruption in 1862 for selling captured Confederate goods for his personal gain.  In 1863 he took part in the largest cavalry battle of the war outside Gettysburg and was promoted to brigadier general.  In 1864 he led an unsuccessful campaign to free Union prisoners from Libby Prison in Richmond.  After the war Johnson appointed him to the post of minister to Chile.

This Judson Kilpatrick mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
