Christopher Houston Carson, also known as Kit Carson achieved national fame as the featured hero in dime novels based on his life as a trailblazer and mountain man. He married into the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes and was hired by John Fremont as a guide. He was a scout in the Mexican-American War and in the 1850s was Indian agent to the Ute and Apaches. He achieved the rank of brevet brigadier general and may be the only American general who was illiterate. His Civil War service was limited, as there was little action in the New Mexico Territory. He fought briefly at the Battle of Valverde but spent most of the Civil War years occupied with “Indian Troubles.” He instituted a scorch earth policy and coerced the Navajo to surrender at Canyon de Chelly.

We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
