Description

Napoleon Dana graduated from West Point.  He fought in and was severely wounded in the Mexican-American War.  In the Civil War, he saw action at the battles of Yorktown, Seven Pines, Savage Station, White Oak Swamp and Malvern Hill.  At Antietam, Dana’s Brigade experienced fierce fighting in the West Woods.  His left flank was attacked by advancing Confederate troops and was in danger of being surrounded.  During the ensuing fight, he was struck in the leg by a musket ball but remained in command while maneuvering his troops to the safety of the Miller Farm.  At this point, he turned over command to Colonel Norman J. Hall and was carried to a Union field hospital.  He did not recover from his wounds for nearly a year.

This Napoleon Dana mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
