Description

Salmon Chase was a lawyer, and while living in Ohio, became known for defending fugitive slaves.  He went from being a member of the Whig Party to the Liberty Party and later the Free Soil Party, which was strongly opposed to slavery.  By 1855 he was elected as the Republican governor of Ohio.  He sought the office of president but lost the nomination to Lincoln.  Elected as a U.S. senator, Salmon Chase resigned to become Lincoln’s secretary of the treasury, establishing the national banking system and issued paper currency.  Chase championed the “greenback demand notes,” creating a stable currency.  In 1864 Lincoln named Chase as chief justice of the United States.  He presided over the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson in 1868.

This Salmon Chase mug is part of our US Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
