A group of Puritan Separatists left England in 1620 to start a life in the New World where they could practice their religion without persecution from the English government. They intended to go to Virginia but bad weather forced them north and they settled on land located in the southeast corner of what was to become Massachusetts. The members of this group created their own laws with the Mayflower Compact, a document they created while still aboard the Mayflower, the ship that took them to the New World. The colony existed from 1620-1691.
