Spiritualism is a religious practice based on the acceptance that an individual, referred to as a medium, can communicate with spirits of the dead. The origins of this movement in the United States date back to March 31, 1848, when Kate and Margaret Fox claimed that they had made contact with a spirit who claimed to be a murdered peddler. Local Quakers, Amy and Isaac Post, who were family friends, became convinced they were genuine mediums and became advocates of them to other Quaker friends.
This movement spread quickly worldwide, though it was most popular with middle and upper classes in the United States and the United Kingdom.
