James Ezekiel Porter attended Bates College and Norwich University and graduated from West Point in 1869. Porter served during the Reconstruction Era in the Southeast, where the 7th Cavalry was used to suppress the Ku Klux Klan and illegal distilling. James Porter was killed in 1876 along with eleven other officers at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Porter led troops in a defensive action with the 7th Cavalry under George Armstrong Custer’s command. Porter was one of the first verified casualties. His buckskin jacket was discovered days after the battle in an abandoned Indian village, a bloody bullet hole located over where his heart would have been.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
