Description
Isaac Allerton was possibly from Suffolk, England. He came with his wife, Mary (Norris) Allerton from Newbury, Berkshire. They brought with them their 3 children, Bartholomew Allerton, age 7, Remember Allerton, age 5, and Mary Allerton, age 3. Isaac was married three times, 1st wife Mary (Norris), 2nd wife Fear (Brewster), and 3rd wife Joanna (Swinnerton). He was elected assistant to Governor Bradford in 1621. In 1627, he was sent to London to negotiate the buyout from the London investors. Isaac Allerton engaged the Pilgrims’ joint-stock company in business ventures that led the colony deep into debt and was removed and replaced by Edward Winslow.
The Mayflower
The Mayflower left England in September 1620 with 102 men, women and children bound for Virginia. After 65 days they arrived far north of their preferred destination. They created a government on arrival forming the Mayflower Compact, which stated the colonists would create “laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices…,” follow their Christian faith, work together for the common good, and be loyal subjects to King James.
This Isaac Allerton history mug is part of our Mayflower history series which includes many of the notable figures who played major roles during this conflict.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
