Description
Giles Hopkins was about 12 years old when he accompanied his father Stephen, his second wife, Elizabeth (Fisher) Hopkins, and his siblings on the Mayflower. In 1637, he volunteered for service in the Pequot War but was not called. While living in Plymouth, Giles married Catherine Wheldon in 1639 but moved later to live in Yarmouth. After living in Yarmouth for five years they relocated to Eastham where he died sometime between 1688 and 1690. Giles and Catherine had nine children: Mary, Stephen, John, Abigail, Deborah, Caleb, Ruth, Joshua, William, and Elizabeth.
The Mayflower
The Mayflower left England in September 1620 with 102 men, women and children bound for Virginia. After 65 days they arrived far north of their preferred destination. They created a government on arrival forming the Mayflower Compact, which stated the colonists would create “laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices…,” follow their Christian faith, work together for the common good, and be loyal subjects to King James.
This Giles Hopkins history mug is part of our Mayflower history series which includes many of the notable figures who played major roles during this conflict.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
