Description
James Moore Wayne was an officer in the Georgia Hussars during the War of 1812. He served in the Georgia House of Representatives 1815-1816 and served as Mayor of Savannah. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives but resigned when President Andrew Jackson nominated him as an associate justice to the Supreme Court where he served until his death. In Dred Scott v. Sanford, Chief Justice Roger Taney gave the majority opinion with Wayne concurring that African-Americans, free or enslaved, do not have rights under the Constitution. He agreed with Jackson on the Indian Removal Act, that land that used to belong to the Indians now belonged to the state.
