Description

Lewis Wallace was a governor, statesman and author.  As a general in the Civil War he served in several minor engagements before his deployment to Shiloh.  There he commanded the third division and because of confusing verbal orders was late reinforcing Sherman, who was pushed back by Confederate forces.  When civilians in the East heard of the horrible casualties at Shiloh, the demand for accountability made Wallace a target for criticism.  He was reassigned to command the defense of Cincinnati.  Then in 1864, at the Battle of Monocacy, MD, his 5,800- man force held back Jubal Early’s 15,000 troops long enough for the city to organize a successful defense and repel Early.  Wallace may be best remembered as the author of the novel Ben-Hur.

The Battle of Monocacy

In 1864, Washington, D.C. had been stripped of its troops who were sent to aid in the Siege of Petersburg.  Robert E. Lee ordered General Jubal Early to invade Maryland and attack the capital in Washington.  On July 9, with less than 7,000 Union forces, General Lewis Wallace gathered at Monocacy Junction and fought there to slow the advance of 15,000 Confederates who were headed toward Washington. The Union lost the Battle of Monocacy, but their delaying action allowed reinforcements to reach Washington and save the capital.

This Lewis Wallace mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The content on the mugs is crafted for a stunning visual experience and to inspire an interest to learn more about history.  Robert Compton, who developed HistoryMugs, colorized the hundred-year-old photographs in order to bring the individuals back to life.  Biography and images are designed and printed in Bristol, Vermont, USA.
