Description

Edwin Stanton replaced Simon Cameron as Secretary of War in the Lincoln administration during the Civil War.  He organized the massive military buildup of resources for the Union Army and voided all contracts to suppliers of military materials outside the United States, mandating all manufacturing of war materials be made in the U.S.A.  Edwin Stanton expanded the transportation and communication network of the railroad system and telegraph lines.  Stanton oversaw the manhunt of Lincoln’s killer.  As Secretary of War under the Andrew Johnson, Stanton opposed the lenient policies of the new president toward the former Confederate States.  Johnson’s attempt to dismiss Stanton led to his impeachment by radical Republicans in the House of Representatives.

The first two Secretaries of War were appointed between 1781 and 1789 to serve the Congress of the Confederation. The position became part of the President’s Cabinet starting with the administration of George Washington.  Washington created four cabinet positions to provide him with a source of key advisors, in the form of Attorney General, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of State, and Secretary of War.  Current presidential cabinets are made up of sixteen officers.  Cabinet members are chosen by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

This Edwin Stanton History Mug is part of our Secretary of War series which includes the many unique individuals who served as U.S. Secretary of War.
