Description

John Marshall was the longest-serving Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.  He played a significant role in the development of the American legal system, authoring half of the court’s decisions during his tenure.  His ruling in the Marbury v. Madison case of 1803 cemented the position of the judiciary as an independent and co-equal branch of government.  He affirmed the supremacy of federal law over state law.  Often over the opposition of Jeffersonians (and later the Jacksonians) who wanted greater powers for state governments.  In the treason case against vice-president Aaron Burr, Marshall ruled the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence to prove treason.

US Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest federal court of the United States, established in 1788 pursuant to Article Three of the U.S. Constitution.  It has the ultimate jurisdiction over all federal and state court cases involving federal laws.  The Court normally consists of the Chief Justice and eight associate justices, who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate.  Justices have lifetime tenure unless they resign, retire or are removed after impeachment.  The Supreme Court is one of the three branches of the federal government which also includes the Executive (President) and Legislative (Senate and House of Representatives).
