Description
Noah Haynes Swayne was admitted to the bar in Virginia but because of his opposition to slavery, he moved to the free state of Ohio. President Andrew Jackson appointed Swayne as U.S. Attorney for Ohio, after which he was elected to the state legislature. In 1862, President Lincoln nominated him to the Supreme Court where he served for eighteen years. His most famous opinion in Springer v. United States (1881) was to uphold the Federal income tax that had been imposed under the Revenue Act of 1864. Swayne was quite infirm in his last years on the Court and was pressured by President Hayes to resign. He agreed, if his friend, Stanley Matthews, would be nominated to take his place.

It has the ultimate jurisdiction over all federal and state court cases involving federal laws. The Court normally consists of the Chief Justice and eight associate justices, who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Justices have lifetime tenure unless they resign, retire or are removed after impeachment. The Supreme Court is one of the three branches of the federal government which also includes the Executive (President) and Legislative (Senate and House of Representatives).
