As a lawyer, Samuel Blatchford turned down a judgeship on N.Y.’s highest court, but in 1867 accepted a position on the Federal   District Court for the Southern District of New York.  Five years later he was elevated to the United States Court of Appeals of the Second Circuit.  In 1882, President Chester Arthur nominated Blatchford as an associate justice to the Supreme Court, where he then served for eleven years.  Blatchford was an expert in admiralty and patent law and authored Blatchford and Howland’s Admiralty Cases, which was considered the most complete work of its kind.  He wrote 430 opinions and two dissents during his tenure on the Court.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
