Description
President Woodrow Wilson nominated James Clark McReynolds to the Supreme Court, where he served for twenty-six years. He is known for his sustained opposition to the New Deal programs of President Franklin Roosevelt. McReynolds personal views tended toward bigotry, and for three years he refused to speak to fellow jurist Louis Brandeis, who was the first Jewish member of the Court. In the case of Steward Machine Co. v. Davis (1937), he dissented from the decision upholding the Social Security Act. McReynolds wrote, “I can not find any authority in the Constitution for making the Federal Government the great almoner of public charity throughout the United States.”
