Byron White was a Navy intelligence officer during WW II.  In 1962, President Kennedy nominated him to the Supreme Court.  While on the bench he consistently supported the desegregation of public schools.  In Regents of the University of California v. Baker, he voted to uphold affirmative action as a remedy.  He dissented from the Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade, saying the court had favored convenience, whim or caprice of the putative mother more than the life of potential life of the fetus.”  In the case of Furman v. Georgia (1972), concerning the death penalty, White voted to strike down capital punishment statutes, voicing concern over the arbitrary way it was administrated.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
