Description
In 1959, President Eisenhower appointed Harry Blackmun to the U.S. Court of Appeals. In 1970, President Richard Nixon nominated Blackmun to the Supreme Court. He was expected to adhere to a conservative interpretation of the Constitution but proved to be liberal in many of his opinions. He authored the majority opinion in Roe v. Wade and in the companion case of Doe v. Bolton, which held that laws banning abortion were unconstitutional. Blackmun received volumes of hate mail and death threats because of his position. In the 1997, film Amistad, Blackmun portrayed the role of Joseph Story making him the only United States Supreme Court Justice to play a judge in a motion picture.
