Description

Johann Sebastian Bach, born into a family of musicians, began his study of music at a young age, was orphaned by age ten, and a working musician by age eighteen.  His work represents the late Baroque period during which time he became a master of counterpoint and homophony, where a melody is supported by chords or harmonies.  He composed concertos, suites, recitatives, da capo arias, and choral music.  His contemporaries included: Vivaldi, Telemann, and Handel.  He married twice, Maria Barbara Bach, in 1707, and after her death, soprano Anna Magdalena Wilcke Bach in 1721.  He is considered one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music and was highly regarded among his colleagues, during his lifetime.

The works of Johann Sebastian Bach

Bach was known for many compositions.  From 1717-1723, he was hired by Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen. The prince gave him the freedom to be creative and experiment with his compositions, making this a time of musical growth.  After Bach died, his second eldest son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, became the family member most concerned with preserving his father’s legacy.  Scholars feel his best works include the Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, the Brandenburg Concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Well-Tempered Clavier, the St. Matthew Passion, the Six Suites for Solo Cello, the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, the Violin Partita No. 2, the B Minor Mass, and the Flute Sonata in B minor.

This Johann Sebastian Bach history mug is part of our Artist series which includes many of the notable figures who created a variety of beautiful music and art over their careers.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
