Description

A journalist, Gloria Steinem became one of the most influential voices of the American feminist movement in the 1960s and 70s, continuing her role to the present time.  She has been an advocate of “reproductive freedom’ and the peace movement.  She wrote significant articles and books, co-founded Ms. Magazine and in 2005 co-founded the Women’s Media Center, “to make women visible and powerful in the media”.

The Equal Rights Amendment

The Equal Rights Amendment is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal legal rights for all American citizens regardless of sex; it seeks to end the legal distinctions between men and women in terms of divorce, property, employment, and other matters.  It was first proposed in 1921 and again in 1971 but opposition by conservative groups and antifeminists prevented its ratification.

NOW – The National Organization for Women

In 1966, the National Organization for Women was founded, inspired by the failure of the federal government to enforce Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  NOWs Statement of Purpose was written by Betty Friedan and Pauli Murray.  This American feminist organization is one of the first to include the concerns of black women in their efforts.  NOW became well known for advocating for the Equal Rights Amendment.  However, opposition by conservatives and antifeminists prevented its ratification.  It has 550 chapters in all 50 states.

This Gloria Steinem History Mug is part of our Women’s History Biographical Series which includes many unique individuals.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
