Description

Henry Clay Wood attended Norwich University, studying both medicine and law.  He rose to brevetted lieutenant colonel during the Civil War and advanced to the rank of brigadier general by an act of Congress in 1904.  Wood received the Medal of Honor for gallantry at the 1861 Battle of Wilson’s Creek in Missouri.  A lieutenant at the time and despite his own wounds, he managed to hold his company together in an orderly retreat from Ray’s Cornfield while under heavy fire.  In the 1870s Wood served in the Pacific Northwest as part of the Dept. of the Columbia.  A man of integrity, Wood openly disagreed with the Department of Interior policy’s regarding the poor treatment of Native Americans.

This Henry Clay Wood mug is part of our Medal of Honor Series and our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
