Description
John B. Magruder spent 30 years in the U.S. Army. He fought in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War. In 1861 he joined the Confederate Army and rose to the rank of major general. He is best known for outwitting McClellan in the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. He used elaborate ruses to give the impression that he had many times the forces under his command than he actually had at the battle of Yorktown, causing McClellan to delay his advances for weeks. He had a mixed record in later battles but won the Battle of Galveston in 1863. After the war, he fled the U.S.A. for Mexico, where he became a major general in the Imperial Mexican Army. When the emperor’s forces were defeated, he returned to the U.S.A. and lived out his days in Texas.
This John B. Magruder mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
