Description
The son of sharecroppers, Elijah Cummings grew up in Baltimore. He was attacked with bottles and rocks, at age 11, while helping to integrate a local swimming pool. He devoted his life to working for civil rights and practiced law for 14 years before he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1983, and the US House of Representatives in 1996. In 2002, Elijah Cummings voted against the military invasion of Iraq, saying there was insufficient evidence of weapons of mass destruction. As a dedicated public servant, he urged his colleagues to remember the work they did in Congress would outlive them and to remember that Our children are our living messengers to a future we will never see.
The House of Representatives and Senate comprise the legislative branch of the U.S. government. Representatives, elected from congressional districts, are allocated to states based on population measured by the U.S. Census. The number of Representatives is set by law at 435. The House is charged with the passage of federal legislation, known as bills, which after concurrence by the Senate, are sent to the president for consideration. The House has the power to initiate all bills related to revenue and the impeachment of federal officers.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
