Arthur Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician. As a young medical student, he met several future authors including Robert Louis Stevenson. While a third-year student in medical school he was offered the post of ship’s surgeon on a whaling boat and would later again serve as a ship’s doctor on a voyage to the West African coast. In 1881, Doyle set up an unsuccessful practice in Portsmouth and returned to writing fiction. During the Second Boer War in 1900, Doyle served as a volunteer doctor in a South Africa field hospital. He had a longstanding interest in mystical subjects and was fascinated by the idea of paranormal phenomena. Doyle was avowedly not a Christian and considered himself a Spiritualist. When he died in 1930, Doyle was buried on his estate, but after the last of the estate grounds were sold, he was reinterred at the churchyard in Minstead.
Between 1888 and 1906, Arthur Conan Doyle wrote seven historical novels which his critics, and Doyle himself, regard as his best work. The prolific author was inspired by his extensive travels. His book of short stories “The Captain of the Polestar,” popularized the mystery of the ship the Mary Celeste is one of the stories. Doyle is best known for his character, Sherlock Holmes, having written 56 short stories and four novels about Holmes and Dr. Watson. Sherlock was based on Dr. Joseph Bell, Doyle’s teacher in medical school. Bell was a master of observation, logic, deduction, and diagnosis. Doyle was ambivalent towards his character of Holmes and considered killing off his most famous creation and raised his price on the stories to discourage his publishers, but he found they were willing to pay the large sums he asked, which made him one of the best-paid authors of his time.
