Description

Edward Bates was a lawyer, politician, and slave owner.  He was from Missouri and served in the U.S. House of Representatives.  He was a Republican candidate for president in 1860 primary but lost to Lincoln.  He was appointed U.S. Attorney General by Lincoln and carried out most of Lincoln’s early war policies.  He disagreed with Lincoln on the issue of the Emancipation Proclamation and the recruitment of blacks in the Union Army.  Edward Bates did not support full civil and political equality for blacks.  He resigned from the Cabinet in 1864 after being passed over for a Supreme Court appointment.  After leaving office he unsuccessfully opposed the adoption of a new state constitution in Missouri.

The position of attorney general was created as part of the president’s cabinet beginning with the administration of George Washington. Washington created four cabinet positions to provide him with a source of key advisers, in the form of the attorney general, secretary of the treasury, secretary of state, and secretary of war.  Current presidential cabinets are made up of sixteen officers.  Members are chosen by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.  The attorney general is the head of the Department of Justice and its top law enforcement officer.

This Edward Bates history mug is part of our U.S. Attorney General series which includes the many unique individuals who served as U.S. Attorney General.
