Description
Roger Taney graduated from Dickinson College. In 1831, he was appointed by Andrew Jackson as the 11th U.S. Attorney General. Taney while legal advisor to the president offered the opinion that protections of the Constitution did not apply to free blacks. In 1833, Taney was next appointed Secretary of the Treasury and two years later Jackson nominated him as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a position he held until his death in 1864. Taney wrote the majority opinion on the Dred Scott Decision. In part, that decision reads “regarded as beings of inferior order, altogether unfit to associate with the white race…and so far inferior, that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect.” Many Republicans accused Taney of being part of a conspiracy to legalize slavery throughout the United States.
The position of attorney general was created as part of the president’s cabinet beginning with the administration of George Washington. Washington created four cabinet positions to provide him with a source of key advisers, in the form of the attorney general, secretary of the treasury, secretary of state, and secretary of war. Current presidential cabinets are made up of sixteen officers. Members are chosen by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The attorney general is the head of the Department of Justice and its top law enforcement officer.
