Description
Dwight D. Eisenhower was a colonel during WWI, who requested but was denied an overseas assignment. By 1935, he was serving as a military advisor in the Philippines helping to develop their army. After the attack on Pearl Harbor Eisenhower was assigned to the General Staff in Washington creating war plans to defeat Japan and Germany. In June of 1942, he was made Commanding General of the European Theater of Operation and in December of 1943, he was designated the Supreme Allied Commander of Allied Expeditionary Force. He was in charge of planning and carrying out the Allied assault on the coast of Normandy in June of 1944 and later that year was promoted to General of the Army where he showed a great talent for leadership and diplomacy. While Eisenhower never saw action himself he won the respect of front-line commanders. In 1952, he ran for and was elected President of the United States.
World War II
The Second World War lasted between 1939 and 1945. It involved the vast majority of the world’s countries. The two opposing military alliances, the Allies and the Axis powers involved more than 30 countries. Aircraft played a major role in the conflict and two nuclear weapons were deployed for the first time. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history resulting in over 80 million fatalities, most were civilians who died due to genocides, starvation, and disease. The U.S. declared war against Japan in 1941 after it attacked Pearl Harbor bringing the U.S. into conflict with all the Axis countries. War crime tribunals were conducted against German and Japanese leaders, in the wake of the Axis defeat.

He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
