Description
Organized in 1770 as a militia organization, the Green Mountain Boys were led by Ethan & Ira Allen along with their cousins Seth Warner & Remember Baker. Based at the Catamount Tavern in Bennington, several hundred Green Mountain Boys controlled the disputed region known as the New Hampshire Grants which were claimed by both New York and New Hampshire. By expelling New York settlers from the region they laid the foundation of the Vermont Republic and eventually the State of Vermont. In 1775, the Green Mountain Boys, led by Ethan captured Fort Ticonderoga and others led by Seth Warner captured Crown Point.
The Green Mountain Rangers
In the summer of 1775, some of the Green Mountain Boys joined the Continental Army becoming the basis for the Green Mountain Rangers. As a regiment of the Continental Army, they selected Colonel Seth Warner as their leader. Another contingent of the Green Mountain Boys remained as a militia with Ethan Allen. In August of 1775, after a failed attempt to capture the city of Montreal, Allen, and his boys were captured and taken prisoner. Ethan was held captive for nearly three years which even including some time in England. When he returned to his home, Vermont had already declared its independence becoming the Vermont Republic. The Green Mountain Boys faded away when Vermont joined the United States as the 14th state in 1791.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
