Description
Desert Fathers or Desert Monks, were Christian hermits and ascetics, who lived primarily in the Scetes desert of the Roman province of Egypt, beginning around the third century AD. The Apophthegmata Patrum is a collection of the wisdom of some of the early desert monks and nuns, in print as Sayings of the Desert Fathers. The first Desert Father was Paul of Thebes, and the most well-known was Anthony the Great, who moved to the desert in AD 270–271 and became known as both the father and founder of desert monasticism. By the time Anthony died in AD 356, thousands of monks and nuns had been drawn to living in the desert following Anthony’s example.
Desert Monks
The Desert Fathers and Mothers retreated to the outskirts of cities and into the deserts of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine to think through the meaning of such change and to find a different way of being a Christian in the world. They were ordinary Christians living in solitude who chose to renounce the world to deliberately and individually follow God’s call. They were the earliest Christian monks, and the foundation stone of the movement that eventually took over all of the Eastern Church and most of the Western Church.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
