The Medal of Honor was created during the Civil War. It was awarded 1522 times during that conflict.
Mary Edward Walker was the only woman to receive the medal and one of only eight civilians.
Today the Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration, but during the Civil War it was the only medal to acknowledge service and given more liberally.
Many hundreds of awards (beyond the 1522 mentioned above) were handed out in the Civil War but were later revoked.
