Description

Morrison Waite served as a mayor in Ohio and was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives.  In 1871, Grant appointed him to a commission to settle claims against Great Britain for assisting the Confederacy during the Civil War resulting in over $15,000,000 in compensation to the U.S.  In 1874, President Grant nominated Waite as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court where he served for fourteen years.  He helped establish the legal concept of corporate personhood and sided with the majority in striking down the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which had prohibited discrimination acceding public services, this was not restored until the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
