David Josiah Brewer served on the Kansas Supreme Court for fourteen years.  In 1884, Chester Arthur appointed him as a federal circuit judge.  Brewer was nominated as an associate justice to the Supreme Court by President Benjamin Harrison in 1889.  He was generally hostile to regulation but in Muller v. Oregon (1908) he sustained the Oregon law that set maximum working hours for female laborers.  In Church of Holy Trinity v. United States, which included the claim that the United States was a Christian nation, he sided in their favor with the majority.  Brewer generally ruled against African Americans in civil rights cases but voted in favor of Chinese immigrants.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
