Description

Appointed secretary of war by Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft went on to become the 27th president and the 10th chief justice of the U.S.  Taft is the only person to have served in both capacities.  As president, his agenda included civil service reform, passage of the 16th Amendment, trust-busting, and strengthening the Postal Service and Interstate Commerce Commission.  After his defeat for a second term, he went into academia and the pursuit of world peace via the “League to Enforce Peace.”  President Harding appointed William H. Taft as chief justice of the United States.  He oversaw a conservative court where he served until shortly before his death in 1930.
