Description
Byron White was a Navy intelligence officer during WW II. In 1962, President Kennedy nominated him to the Supreme Court. While on the bench he consistently supported the desegregation of public schools. In Regents of the University of California v. Baker, he voted to uphold affirmative action as a remedy. He dissented from the Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade, saying the court had favored “convenience, whim or caprice of the putative mother more than the life of potential life of the fetus.” In the case of Furman v. Georgia (1972), concerning the death penalty, White voted to strike down capital punishment statutes, voicing concern over the arbitrary way it was administrated.
