Description

During WW II, Lewis Franklin Powell Jr. served in Europe and North Africa in the  Army Air Force.  He was on the school board when the Commonwealth of Virginia was in a campaign of defiance against the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education (1954).  He later served as a member of  L.B. Johnson’s Crime Commission.  In 1971, President Nixon nominated Powell to the U.S. Supreme Court.  He wrote the majority opinion in First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti, which overturned a Massachusetts law restricting corporate contributions.  This ruling influenced the future decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that allowed unlimited election spending by corporations and labor unions.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
